Former Glenayr Kitten Mill Property

Thursday, 23 November 2023

The Township has been working diligently to determine the safest course of action to deal with the continuing deterioration of the former Glenayr Kitten Mill at 44 George Street, Lanark.

Orders were issued to the owner to obtain an engineering report and take necessary steps to make the structures on the property safe. As the orders were not complied with, the Township erected fencing to prevent public access to the property and retained its own engineer to assess the structures and make recommendations about how to address the condition of the buildings. The Township’s engineer found that all of the structures were in a state of disrepair and recommended that 3 be demolished immediately and the remaining 2 required immediate action to stabilize them.

As a result, in September of this year the Township issued a further order requiring the owner to take necessary steps to make the property safe. Again, the owner took no steps to prepare a plan to stabilize the structures or apply for building permits to attempt to make the structures safe.

Faced with an unsafe property, the Township has retained a contractor to demolish the structures to ensure public safety. The owner will be invoiced for the costs of demolition at the end of the process.

The demolition is anticipated to begin anytime after November 24, 2023.
